6 months checkup
by Photobug Mom ~ February 9th, 2007. Filed under: Cyrus' growth.Today is Cyrus’ 6 months checkup. He is actually one day short for 6 months but we are going on a trip on Monday and Dr. S won’t be in tomorrow. That’s why we went in today.
I guess their office was pretty busy. We waited for a long time, almost an hour I think. But it’s all worth it. DH and I both felt good about seeing the same doctor every time. Dr. S is a very nice and patient doctor. We both like him. I think Cyrus will think he is cool guy too when he is a little bit older.
Cyrus weighed 16 pounds and 11 ounces, measured 25 ¾ inches long/tall. His head circumference was 44cm. Other than his length being 48th percentile, his weight and head size were both right on 50th. Dr. S was very pleased with his growth, his motor skill, and the way he socialized. I mentioned that I am giving cereal once a day. I told him I tried sweet potato once but he didn’t seem interested. He wasn’t concerned. He said it’s good to offer him different kinds of food but it’s okay if he doesn’t want it. He is growing just perfectly with breast milk. I couldn’t be happier to hear that.
We went over some concerns we had, such as sign language and his using left hand more often. He said it’s not necessary to have him learn sign language but it’s “cool”. He may learn to speak more slowly if he knows how to communicate with sign language. So it’s up to us basically. I don’t know. I need to discuss with DH. In some ways I think it’s good for him to learn to communicate early and that may reduce some of his frustration. On the other hand, I would rather he learns how to speak sooner than later.
As for using left hand, Dr. S actually seemed almost “happy or excited” when we told him we’ve noticed he uses his left hand more often. He said parents can’t decide which hand their child want to use and he would like to see if Cyrus actually turns out to be left handed. I don’t know about this part either. I think I would prefer he is able to use both hands. Anyways, I am not going to force Cyrus to do anything. We’ll let the nature take the course.
We also addressed some questions in terms of him going on a plane trip. Dr. said as long as his jaw is moving he will be fine. After he checked Cyrus’ ears, he also said his ears looked good and he should be just fine with the flight. I still need to get baby cold medicine and Benedryl though since the Dr. said I should have them with me.
Talking about sleeping and night feeding, he said Cyrus is old enough and it’s okay to let him cry for a long time. He said if we put Cyrus to bed at 8pm, I should feed him around midnight and than let him sleep until 5 or 6am without feeding again. I think we’re going to have to let him cry until he falls asleep on his own. After we come back from the trip, of course.
I am very pleased with Cyrus’ growth. Now, we just need to focus on training him to sleep in the crib and reduce the night feeding to once.
