back home
by Photobug Mom ~ March 15th, 2007. Filed under: travel stories.Flying time from Taipei to US is shorter. We departed at dinnertime so I thought Cyrus would be able to sleep most of the time. He didn’t. Before we arrived at Seattle, he only slept for 3 hours. I wanted to let him cry to sleep in the car seat. However, the mother next to us couldn’t stand Cyrus’ crying and insisted me “do something”. I was closing my eyes and she shook my pillow. “Your baby is crying,” she said. I said, “that’s how he is before he falls asleep.” She obviously didn’t believe and said “maybe his paper(diaper) is dirty.” Well, I did change him and it didn’t matter. I ended up holding him in my arms until he was too tired to stay awake. I felt going nuts.
On the way to get my checked in luggage out to go through customs, the only elevator was broken. I was in line with a bunch of passengers needed wheelchair. I needed to get back to the gate and the time was running out. I decided to make several trips downstairs, carrying Cyrus in the car seat, my carry-on, diaper bag, and the stroller. Thanks to a custom guy helping me with my almost-30kgs-luggage, I went through customs without any hassle.
As soon as we boarded, Cyrus fell asleep again. He slept for the first three hours. I finally got some time to rest.
We stayed at my aunt’s in New Jersey for two days before we flew back home. It was a nice visit other than the fact that they kept saying Cyrus wasn’t getting enough food. I told them he was in the 50th percentile and the doctor was pleased. However, they just went on and on about how big their sons were when they were at Cyrus’ age. First of all, they were both bottle-fed babies. Secondly, I don’t see why bigger is better. I didn’t want to argue with them but felt really annoyed by it. Cyrus did try some apple for the first time when we were there. I didn’t want them to give him too many things at one time. They kept saying, “see? He put things in his mouth. He wants to eat.” My uncle even said “you should give him more formula. It’s more nutritious.” That’s completely out dated idea. But what’s the sense arguing with them. I was relieved that they didn’t force to feed him anything else.
We headed to the airport on Saturday. Not until twenty minutes before the scheduled departure time did they announce that the flight was delayed for 3 hours. I couldn’t believe it. Three hours later we were told the flight won’t be ready to leave for another hour. Obviously the plane was flying from another place and already delayed. We’re supposed to get in around dinnertime but it was already ten thirty by the time I finally got home. Cyrus’ daddy was a little bit disappointed that we couldn’t have a dinner together.
It took Cyrus a little while to remember his Daddy and then they played together. Here is a short video clip I took that night.

I’m so glad you’re home safe! Your aunt and uncle’s comments drove me CRAZY to read!! How frustrating for you. Of course Cyrus is having better nutrition than their big babies ever did on formula. *sigh*
Your husband must have missed Cyrus soooo much! I love the video clip – what a cute little baby boy you have! I liked to hear your voice too
You did GREAT travelling on your own with a baby! I am so impressed. I do not know how I would have managed! Welcome home!
