Cyrus 14 months old quick update

    Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

I’m so behind here. I always like to write about Cyrus’ new progress on/around the 10th every month but this time I am way too late.

Life has been quite hectic since I started working. Everyday is like a blur. Busy at the office, crazy at home. Every evening, as soon as I get home, we need to feed the finicky little eater. A few things that he usually eats: squash, oatmeal with milk, bread, fruit. We’ve been trying to offer him more balanced menu but he is really difficult to please, at the dinner table anyways. Sometimes he gets really tired because of getting up early and not getting enough nap time at day care, he only wants to nurse. Man, I am wondering if I need to wean him soon. To be honest, I think I’m a little bit burnt out by his all evening nursing demand. I simply don’t have enough time to do everything. Not to mention updating the diary.

Cyrus has been imitating us speaking. Yesterday, I believe, he said his first word: “lights” in Mandarin. I’ve been teaching him that word but last evening when I turned the lights on in the dining room, he pointed at the light and said the word. Even though the pronunciation is not completely correct, I knew that’s what he was saying. I was so excited!

Cyrus is gradually getting used to be at the day care. I don’t need to watch him eating breakfast anymore. He loves to join other children for breakfast and would happily wave goodbye to me when I am leaving. We’ve also noticed some different behaviors he has at day care and at home. When we change his diapers, he cries and fights. He doesn’t do that at day care. He would throw food on the floor when we feed him. Sharon said he doesn’t do that at day care anymore. This simply amazes me.

    finicky eater

    Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Cyrus is a really finicky eater now. Meal time is always a war time. The place where he eats always looks like a battle ground afterward. Okay, we do get lucky once a while but not very often though.

The only things he doesn’t say NO to are: most of the fruits, milk, yogurt, bread, and crackers. Winter squash and avocado are the very few things among vegetables that he would eat. He barely eats any meat or fish but he loves shrimp. Eggs are hit and miss, depending on our luck. If you offer anything that he doesn’t want, he would either push your hand away or throws it on the floor and get angry.

The baby book says that it’s not uncommon for children this age to have a decreased appetite. They tend to eat more when they are having a growth spurt, slow down otherwise. Sometimes teething or a cold may decrease the appetite as well. Cyrus’ 5th teeth has finally come in and the 6th one is on its way. The book also mentioned that the children who are not forced to eat tend to have a nice growth. On the other hand, children who are forced to eat usually developed long-term eating problems.

Miss Sharon at the day care doesn’t seem to be worried at his not eating much either. She thinks it’s a phase and it will change. She does say: “Cyrus is his own man.” He sure is! >_<
