dealing with GD

Monday, March 30th, 2009

28 days left! Wow, I can’t believe it. 2nd time around it seems to go very fast. Or maybe because I’ve been so busy at work and tired all the time? It’s definitely harder when there is a two year old running around.

I’ve been dealing with my GD okay I guess. It’s really frustrating and depressing sometimes when people around you are enjoying delicious deserts or when I get those craving for a big bowl of noodle soup! I like the instructions from my dietitian this time better though. First of all, I don’t have to wait for two hours to test my blood sugar. I test my sugar one hour after meal. That’s much easier to keep track and remember. Besides, she basically tells me to look at the “Total Carbohydrate” on the nutritional facts of food package. For three main meals, I should take about 60 grams of carbohydrates and 15 grams for morning and afternoon snacks; 30 grams for bedtime snacks. That’s so much easier than counting “servings” or to weigh the food.

Nutrition Facts Label

The bottom line for me is to stay away from white rice, noodles, sweets, and juice and the best food for me is meat and fish. Thank God I can still eat as much fish as I want. It’s hard not being allowed to drink juice though. I am not a big pop drinker but I am not too crazy about drinking all plain water either. I am having diet Pepsi for treat for now. The doctor seems to think diet pop in moderation is okay.

Anyways, I already told DH to bring me a BIg bowl of noodle soup to the hospital once the baby is born. There are so many other things on my to-eat-list. I can’t wait!

Mommy lives on Sesame Street?

My conversation with Cyrus last night…

I just realized he pooed in the diaper. I said: “Cyrus, you stink!” He said: “How much?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was building a house with wooden blocks.
“What a nice building. Who lives there?” I said.
“Daddy.”
“Who else?”
“Cyrus.”
“Who else?”
“People.”
“Any people.”
“Yes.”
“How about Mommy? Does Mommy live there?”
“No.”
“Where does Mommy live then?”
“Mommy lives on Sesame Street.”
Vitus
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
I rent this movie from Blockbuster a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it.
Vitus is the story of a child prodigy who has everything he wants except the chance to be a normal kid. At six, Vitus is both incredibly talented and wonderfully precocious. When it becomes evident that he has an exceptionally high IQ and can play piano like a young Mozart, expectations run high. His parents love him, his grandfather understands him, but no one knows the truth that his real genius is in his heart.
This movie really made me think. Think how we sometimes put so much pressure on our children. As soon as the baby is born, we have a “schedule” in our mind: when should he smile, crawl, sit, stand up, and walk. When should he start talking, reading, and so on. We tend to forget that everyone child is different and they have each own personality, strengths, and weaknesses. We tend to want our child to do whatever other child is doing.
Raising a child is kind of like offering a child food. You need to offer a variety of food but you can’t make decisions for them. I used to get upset when Cyrus didn’t eat something I offer but I don’t anymore. You can’t make choices for your child, they do. It’s their life and all you can do is to point out all different options available and let them know that you’ll be there for them no matter what.
home birth or hospital birth
Thursday, March 5th, 2009
I wanted SO badly a home birth this time! I guess it’s not going to happen for me, not for this time anyways.
I am so tired of sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office for an half hour and only get to spend 5 minutes with the doctor. They always seem in such a great hurry. A couple times I even need to deal with the residents.
I need personal attention and I am not getting it from the doctors. During Cyrus’ birth, my OB only showed up the last half hour and then disappeared again. All I saw are residents and nurses. When next round of shift came, other unfamiliar faces.
I contacted one nurse midwife that does strictly home birth. We met her at her home office. There was a couch for us and some toys for little ones. She even made a cup of hot tea for us. The whole meeting lasted about 1 hour and it was better than any of my doctor’s visit experience. She was so patient with any our concerns.
However, even after meeting with her, DH still wasn’t comfortable with home birth but she couldn’t really guarantee a hospital delivery. Upon her suggestion, I also contacted the nurse midwife association who delivers at the same hospital I am going to. Unfortunately they wouldn’t accept me as a patient due to my GD. I felt so disappointed.
My plan now is to study on Bradley natural birth method on my own. (Too late to take a class.) If I can’t have a dream home birth, hopefully I can get to have a natural hospital birth.
2.5 years checkup
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009
Height: 35 3/8 inches, about 90 cm
Weight: 30.4 lbs
Head: 51 cm
Overall a very smooth doctor visit other than the time trying to get him to stand on the scale. He had a little nice conversation with the doctor and even remembered the equipment on the wall is for the eyes and ears.
We’ve asked about his weight being a little above average and height below average. We thought maybe that meant his being a little over weight. However, the doctor seemed to think the extra weight is from his above average size head. :D Well, DH and I are both happy with his head size all along.
We also discussed with the doctor about his running nose, worrying he’s got DH’s allergy to cat and dog hair since our tenant has a cat. Doctor said we need the blood work to find out what he is allergic to. We also notice that Cyrus’ been having some kind of rash on his right arm for a couple months now. We tried a few different lotions and they don’t seem to help any. The doctor took a look and said it could be either Psoriasis or Eczema. He sent us to the dermatologist. So far, even the dermatologist doesn’t have a diagnosis. We are trying the prescribed medicine from the dermatologist and we hope it will help.
